The "Great and Spacious Building" makes room for irony...

I read online that the "Book of Mormon" musical is heading back to Denver in the fall.  "How ironic," I thought.  If the thousands of theatergoers who will pay to watch all things Mormon mocked were to read only the first eight chapters of the book itself, they would come to the prophet Lehi's vision of the tree of life - and see themselves fulfilling part of his prophecy.

In his vision, Lehi partakes of the fruit on this tree, which we later learn represents the love of God, "which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children of men; wherefore, it is the most desirable above all things." (1 Nephi 11:22)  He witnesses other people progressing toward this goal as well as various objects within the scene, which respectively are designed to either help or detract from their ongoing journey toward the tree.

One of the objects is a building.

"And I also cast my eyes round about, and beheld, on the other side of the river of water, a great and spacious building; and it stood as it were in the air, high above the earth.  And it was filled with people, both old and young, both male and female; and their manner of dress was exceedingly fine; and they were in the attitude of mocking and pointing their fingers towards those who had come at and were partaking of the fruit." (1 Nephi 8:26-27)

I hope that the following verse is more symbolic than literal as it relates to those who will be watching from within the walls of the theater.

"And it came to pass that I saw and bear record, that the great and spacious building was the pride of the world; and it fell, and the fall thereof was exceedingly great. And the angel of the Lord spake unto me again, saying: Thus shall be the destruction of all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, that shall fight against the twelve apostles of the Lamb." (1 Nephi 11:36)

Alanis Morissette Would Be Jealous...

Yesterday, while crossing the street (legally, at an intersection after I was given the "Walk" sign) I was almost hit by a van that came speeding around the corner in front of me. The ironic part? It was a police crime scene van.
